Making the Carnevale Rosa
I thought it might be fun to share my design process for the latest Laughing Queen mini handbag creation – the Carnevale Rosa.
I begin with an overall fanciful aesthetic that I’m trying to achieve. Since most everything I design is an assemblage of new and old, I start out by looking through my stash of fabrics, trims, and baubles. I do get LOTS of ideas in my head, but it’s nearly impossible to exactly recreate them – I could spend hours trying to find the exact materials, and, usually, they don’t exist. So, it’s better to use what I’ve already collected on my treasure hunts. Most often, I’ll alter the materials in some way in order to get a desired effect – like tea staining fabric. In this case, I started out tea staining this pink striped fabric with this fancy dragon pearl jasmine herbal tea. Full disclosure – this did not make enough of a noticeable stain so I ended up using Irish black tea instead. The original color is on the lower left and the stained color is on the upper right. Very subtle, but it makes a difference since I was going for a vintage feel.
I like to put characters into my pieces so I hand paint each one to match the color scheme.
The final product is always a surprise to me. Most often, I’m pleased with the outcome. However, sometimes I just put it in my bag of “fails.” Not really fails because every project is a learning process. Better to try and fail than never to try at all.

Bourbon Mini Handbag – my new design
The Bourbon Mini Handbag is my latest handbag – designed 100% by me (after much trial and error)! Inspired by Dolce and Gabbana’s Sicily handbag design, I wanted a pretty, mini handbag with a top handle and flap with room for oodles of sumptuous embellishment. Here are my first two one-of-a-kind releases, the Aegean Mermaid and the Gilded Rose Cherub.
I love tiny handbags, don’t you? I can’t wait for more…

Red Velvet Macaron Mini Handbag
I love mini handbags! I love red velvet! I love macarons! My limited edition Red Velvet Macaron Mini Handbag is a sweet mix of all three. My favorite feature is the macaron zipper pull adorning each purse – so cute!

Josephine’s Coronation
I’m so proud of my latest one-of-a-kind ribbon choker necklace, Josephine’s Coronation.
This piece could easily fit into my “Confections” collection. I just can’t get enough of the crimson red and sky blue color combination since seeing Kirsten Dunst wearing this gorgeous outfit in the 2006 Marie Antoinette (Sofia Coppola) movie.
I’d describe this ribbon choker necklace as “couture jewelry” in that it’s a bit more fashion than jewelry. Probably due to my fashion design background, my “jewelry” is constructed more like a garment (for example – fully lined, button closure). The only “jewelry” portion comes from vintage jewelry findings (sky blue glass starburst) and some fire polished vitrail Czech glass beads.
Not for shrinking violets, this one is sure to get you noticed.

Springtime velvet cuff bracelets
Spring is in the air and cherubs and cupids abound!
These fairy tale treasures are my latest creations, inspired by the newly pollinated flowers popping up in the garden. There’s no doubt the fairies have been spreading their magic dust.

A day at the races!
Every spring I look forward to watching the Kentucky Derby. Churchill Downs has been hosting this tradition rich Derby since 1875. The actual race is over within minutes, however, it’s the pomp and circumstance leading up to the big race that is most entertaining. Ladies wearing extravagant fascinators while sipping mint juleps, jockeys atop their horses in their vibrant silks, and a garland of red roses at the finish line.
My Camden Equestrian Linen and Leather Handbag is inspired the the Derby and rich equestrian traditions. The genuine leather smells so good and I love the soft, suede-like saddle red interior. Paired with slim jeans (or jodhpurs), a fitted blazer and knee-high boots, this little bag is right at home.

A Bit of the Bubbly
Just listed this fanciful and lavish necklace, “Bit of the Bubbly,” in my Etsy shop.
A vintage champagne spilling cherub sits atop an antique style golden pendant with a handmade dangling champagne bottle charm. Unexpected feathers adorn the sparkling bubble beaded green velvet ribbon choker necklace. So perfect for a New Years Eve celebration.

Confections
French confections inspire these beauties. I imagine Marie Antoinette commissioning these flouncy necklaces for her wardrobe while sampling a sumptuous variety of gourmet crème patisserie. Entirely self-indulgent, these one-of-a-kind couture adornments are like dessert for your neck.

Wish Upon a Star
Putting the finishing touches on my latest celestial inspired necklace – Wish Upon a Star. This fanciful limited edition is now available in my Etsy shop. I imagine the lute strumming cherub playing a Baroque version of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” to the watching moon. ♪♫♪
